Silchar, May 7: A joint operation conducted by Assam Police and the Assam Rifles resulted in the arrest of a husband-wife duo and the recovery of arms and explosives from a rented house in Silchar’s Tarapur area on May 7, officials said.
The operation was carried out at Tarapur 6th Block near Ramnagar after security agencies tracked the suspects through mobile phone location data.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Kumar said the accused were apprehended during an overnight raid jointly conducted by Assam Police and the Assam Rifles.
“By tracing their mobile locations, we apprehended both of them last night. The operation was jointly conducted by Assam Police and Assam Rifles,” Kumar said while briefing the media.
The arrested individuals were identified as Laishram Tiken Meitei and Monalisha Chanu, both natives of Churachandpur in Manipur.
During the search of their rented accommodation, security personnel recovered a 9mm Italian pistol, five rounds of live ammunition and a Chinese grenade.
According to local residents, the couple had been living in the locality as tenants for nearly one-and-a-half months.
The seizure of sophisticated weapons and explosives from a densely populated residential area triggered concern among local residents and led to heightened security deployment in the neighbourhood.
Police said a detailed investigation has been initiated to ascertain whether the couple had any links with banned insurgent outfits or underground organisations operating in the region.
Both accused remain in police custody and are being interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation.
