Assam to Launch Mega Plantation Drive on World Environment Day, Aim to Plant One Crore Saplings

Guwahati, June 3: The Assam government will carry out a state-wide plantation drive on World Environment Day on June 5, involving around 35 lakh women associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday, June 3.

In a post on social media platform X, Sarma said the initiative aims to plant one crore saplings across the state, describing it as one of the largest community-led environmental campaigns in Assam.

He stated, “One crore trees. 35 lakh women. One shared commitment for Assam’s future,” adding that SHG members will lead the plantation effort across districts.

The Chief Minister also emphasised the role of women in grassroots development, noting that the campaign reflects their contribution to environmental protection and sustainable development through community institutions.

Officials said the drive will be implemented across the state through SHG networks under various government programmes, with a focus on expanding green cover and encouraging public participation in conservation efforts.

The initiative coincides with World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5 to raise awareness about environmental challenges and promote sustainable practices.
