The Congress on July 15 intensified its criticism of the BJP-led Assam government over its pledge to provide two lakh government jobs during the next five years, alleging that similar employment promises made in the past were never fulfilled.
Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar said unemployment continues to be one of the state’s most pressing concerns and expressed doubt over the government’s ability to meet its latest recruitment target.
“BJP often fails to deliver on what it promises. We currently have nearly 40 lakh unemployed young men and women in the state. Even the target of providing two lakh jobs over the next five years is unlikely to be achieved,” Sikdar said.
He asserted that the opposition’s primary concern is ensuring employment opportunities for the state’s youth.
“We have just one demand: our youth must be provided with work and employment,” he added.
Leader of Opposition Wazed Ali Chowdhury also criticised the government’s announcement, alleging that the BJP was repeating commitments it had failed to fulfil earlier.
“They had earlier promised to provide two lakh government jobs and eight lakh employment opportunities, but failed to fulfil those commitments. Now they have repeated the same promise. They are simply lying,” Chowdhury alleged.
The Leader of Opposition also commented on the flood situation in Assam, contending that the recent inundation was primarily the result of inadequate drainage infrastructure rather than rising river levels.
“The water level isn’t actually dangerously high. The flooding is caused by just a single day of rain,” he said, attributing the recurring floods to deficiencies in urban planning and drainage systems.
The BJP government has maintained that it remains committed to providing two lakh government jobs during its current term and has said that recruitment processes are underway across multiple departments as part of its employment programme.
