ECI sets January 4 deadline for final electoral rolls in 17 states, UTs

NEW DELHI, Oct 17: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled the publication of final electoral rolls for January 4, 2027, under a Special Summary Revision (SSR) covering 17 states and Union Territories ahead of Assembly elections due early next year.

The revision will use January 1, 2027, as the qualifying date for voter eligibility and will cover states including Assam, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan, as well as the Union Territories of Puducherry, Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

In a communication to Chief Electoral Officers, the Commission said the exercise would be conducted under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. It follows instructions issued on September 29 for a special drive to enrol eligible voters missing from the rolls, particularly young people and first-time voters.

Under the schedule, polling stations will be rationalised and rearranged by November 2, 2026, before the draft electoral rolls are published on November 12.

Claims and objections can be filed from November 12 to December 11, with the disposal deadline set for December 28. The final rolls will be published on January 4, 2027.

The ECI has also directed Electoral Registration Officers to accept advance applications from people who will become eligible to enrol on the subsequent qualifying dates of April 1, July 1 and October 1, 2027.
