Floods Leave Over 15 Stranded, 100 Cattle Marooned in Assam’s Jonai

Guwahati, June 29: Flash floods triggered by incessant rainfall and a sudden rise in the water level of the Dikari River have disrupted normal life in Assam’s Jonai, inundating low-lying areas and leaving more than 15 people stranded along with nearly 100 cattle on a riverine char.

According to local reports, the swollen river flooded several residential areas, submerged roads and agricultural fields, and disrupted connectivity to a number of villages across the region.

The worst-affected location is Koraibari Char in the Telam area, where more than 15 residents have been marooned since Sunday morning after rapidly rising floodwaters cut off the river island from the mainland.

Local sources said the strong current and continuous increase in the river’s water level have made it impossible for the stranded residents to move to safer places. Around 100 cattle are also trapped on the char, raising fears of significant livestock losses if evacuation is delayed.

Flood conditions reportedly worsened throughout the day, causing concern among stranded families and nearby villagers.

Several other parts of Jonai have also been affected, with floodwaters entering homes, damaging roads and submerging crop fields. Many families living in vulnerable areas have shifted to safer locations as a precaution.

Following information received from local residents, the Jonai administration initiated steps to deploy a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to carry out rescue operations.

However, at the time of reporting, the stranded residents were still awaiting evacuation as rescue teams prepared to launch operations.

The district administration has advised people living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow official advisories as the flood situation continues to remain critical.
