Guwahati, April 4: Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, on April 3 launched a strong attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging entrenched corruption and calling for an investigation into the latter’s alleged links with businessman Shyamkanu Mahanta.
Addressing an election rally in Sarupathar in Golaghat district in support of Congress candidate Jiban Chutia, Gogoi accused the BJP-led government of promoting what he described as a “syndicate raj” in the state. He claimed that such a system benefits a select few operating with political backing, while ordinary citizens face hardships.
Questioning the government’s development claims, Gogoi alleged that key issues such as unemployment, rising prices and gaps in public service delivery persist despite years of BJP rule. He further asserted that several welfare schemes have not effectively reached intended beneficiaries.
The Congress leader also raised concerns over the Chief Minister’s conduct, alleging misuse of public platforms and remarks that, according to him, undermine the dignity of the office and weaken public accountability.
Reiterating his party’s position, Gogoi said that if elected to power, the Congress would dismantle the alleged syndicate network within 100 days and initiate a transparent probe into corruption-related allegations, including those involving Mahanta.
He also criticised what he termed as the centralisation of power under the current administration, stating that grassroots voices have been sidelined. Emphasising the Congress’s agenda, Gogoi said the party would focus on inclusive governance and ensure equitable distribution of welfare benefits without discrimination.
The remarks come amid intensifying political exchanges in Assam as campaigning gathers pace ahead of the Assembly elections.
