Dibrugarh, April 25: The importance of historical awareness in shaping a nation’s future was underscored at a general meeting of the Dibrugarh District unit of the Bharatiya Itihas Sankalan Samiti, held on April 24 at DHSK College.
Addressing the gathering, National General Secretary Hemanta Dhing Majumdar said that a strong understanding of history is essential for national progress. He emphasised that society, politics, religion and culture are the result of centuries of evolution, and that studying history enables people to understand the journey of a nation, its language and its people. He also noted that past mistakes, whether arising from conflict or flawed policies, serve as lessons that can help prevent similar errors in the future.
The meeting was presided over by Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia, Principal of DHSK College and President of the district unit, who highlighted that history connects a nation to its roots and reflects the sacrifices, struggles and achievements of earlier generations. He added that insights from fields such as literature, architecture, science and art offer inspiration for contemporary innovation while fostering unity and a broader humanitarian outlook.
Organising Secretary Manoj Kumar Barman described history as a reflection of human civilisation’s development, while Juri Sharma termed it a repository of human experiences. Bhaskar Nath expressed confidence that the district committee could gain wider recognition with systematic planning.
The programme began with the traditional felicitation of guests and included an outline of the meeting’s objectives by Dr Jyoti Prasad Phukan. A new executive committee for the 2026–2028 term was constituted, with Dr Saikia unanimously reappointed as President for a second term. The committee includes Karishma J.K. Baishnavi as Secretary, Dr Jyoti Prasad Phukan as Vice-President, Pooja Bhattacharya as Organising Secretary, along with several members assigned roles across academic, cultural and administrative responsibilities.
The meeting reinforced the organisation’s focus on documenting history based on factual accuracy while promoting awareness of its relevance in contemporary society.
