Imphal, June 8: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday inaugurated the state’s first Exclusive Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) at the Thoubal District Court Complex in Khangabok, marking a significant development in the state’s judicial infrastructure.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Minister said the establishment of the dedicated NIA court would strengthen the justice delivery system and ensure faster access to legal proceedings for citizens. He described the initiative as a major milestone in improving judicial infrastructure in the state.
Highlighting existing law and order challenges, the Chief Minister noted that individuals involved in NIA-related cases previously had to travel outside Manipur for court proceedings. With the new court now operational within the state, such cases can be heard locally, reducing financial burden and inconvenience for litigants.
Speaking on the occasion, M. Sundar termed the inauguration an important step in strengthening judicial institutions in Manipur and said it should be seen as part of broader efforts to improve the state’s legal framework.
The inauguration programme was jointly organised by the Law and Legislative Affairs Department, Government of Manipur, and the High Court of Manipur. Among those present were Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Justices A. Guneshwar Sharma and A. Bimol Singh, Khangabok MLA Surjakumar Okram, senior officials, and representatives of bar associations and the legal fraternity.
Later in the day, the Chief Minister also attended a seminar in Imphal titled “Media for Communal Harmony and Responsible Journalism”, organised by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations in collaboration with the Editors’ Guild Manipur.
The seminar focused on the role of media in promoting communal harmony, ethical reporting and responsible journalism amid evolving social and political challenges.
