Shillong, June 5: Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on June 5 joined party leaders and workers in Shillong to mark World Environment Day by taking part in a plantation drive under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship initiative ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’.
During the tree-planting programme, Nadda said the campaign, launched by the Prime Minister on June 5, 2024, is aimed at advancing environmental conservation through public participation and a shared sense of responsibility.
Addressing BJP workers on the occasion, he noted that lakhs of party workers across the country were participating in plantation activities on World Environment Day as part of the nationwide initiative.
Highlighting the significance of the campaign, Nadda said it has been dedicated to mothers in recognition of their selfless role in nurturing and protecting their children. Drawing a parallel with nature, he added that the environment continuously sustains and safeguards human life, making its protection a collective duty.
“A mother serves her children selflessly throughout her life, and nature too nurtures and protects humanity. Preserving the environment is essential for the well-being of present and future generations,” he said.
The BJP president further stated that the initiative has steadily expanded since its launch. He said that after beginning in 2024 and growing significantly in 2025, the campaign has now evolved into a nationwide movement in 2026, with crores of BJP workers and supporters actively participating in plantation and environmental conservation drives across the country.
Nadda added that BJP leaders and workers visiting Shillong also contributed to the campaign by planting saplings and reaffirming their commitment to environmental protection.
The programme formed part of World Environment Day observances across the country, with similar plantation drives being organised in several states under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.
