Agartala, June 2: Tripura Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury has urged the Centre to introduce direct flight services between Agartala and Mumbai, underscoring the need to strengthen air connectivity between the northeastern state and India’s financial capital.
In a letter addressed to Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, Chowdhury revisited his earlier request and reiterated the importance of establishing a direct air link between the two cities.
He noted that Tripura, being a strategically significant northeastern state, requires improved connectivity with major metropolitan hubs. Mumbai, he said, plays a crucial role as a centre for trade, healthcare, education, tourism and employment, making it a key destination for residents of the state.
At present, passengers travelling between Agartala and Mumbai depend on connecting flights, often involving long transit times. Chowdhury highlighted that this causes considerable inconvenience for students, patients, business travellers and government officials who frequently travel on this route.
The minister stated that a direct flight service would substantially improve regional connectivity, ease passenger movement and contribute to the state’s broader socio-economic development. He urged the Civil Aviation Ministry to examine the feasibility of launching direct flights or, alternatively, improving existing connectivity through better-coordinated flight schedules.
The proposal comes amid wider efforts by northeastern states to enhance air connectivity with major Indian cities in order to promote trade, tourism and investment in the region.
