Wild Elephant Electrocuted After Coming into Contact with Transformer in Sonitpur

SONITPUR: A wild elephant died after suffering an electric shock in Assam’s Sonitpur district on June 18, in an incident that has once again brought attention to the increasing human-elephant conflict in the region.

According to reports, the elephant had ventured out of the Balipara Reserve Forest during the night in search of food and entered the Chariduar area. During its movement, the animal allegedly came into contact with a transformer and was electrocuted.

The elephant died on the spot after sustaining the fatal shock.

Forest department personnel rushed to the location after receiving information about the incident and initiated the required procedures. Officials have begun an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the electrocution.

The incident has once again highlighted the challenges faced in areas bordering forest habitats, where elephants frequently stray into human settlements in search of food, often resulting in tragic encounters and escalating concerns over human-elephant conflict.
