Sribhumi, May 15: Heavy rainfall during the night of May 14 led to severe waterlogging across several parts of Assam, with residents in Sribhumi and Guwahati facing major disruption due to inundated roads and flooded localities.
In Guwahati, the overnight downpour once again exposed the city’s recurring artificial flood problem during the monsoon season. Water accumulated in several major roads and residential areas, leading to heavy traffic congestion and difficulties for office-goers, students and daily commuters.
Multiple stretches of roads remained submerged for hours, slowing vehicular movement across the city. Commuters were seen stranded in long traffic queues, while pedestrians struggled to navigate waterlogged streets.
Residents alleged that poor drainage infrastructure and clogged drains aggravated the situation in several localities, resulting in rapid accumulation of rainwater even after a single night of heavy rainfall.
In Sribhumi, continuous rainfall inundated several low-lying areas, with roads and residential neighbourhoods submerged under water. Waterlogging in different parts of the town disrupted normal public activities and affected vehicular movement.
The rainfall also impacted commercial zones in both areas, with traffic movement slowing considerably due to flooded roads and overflowing drains.
Residents expressed concern over the recurring nature of urban flooding, particularly in Guwahati, and urged authorities to adopt long-term measures to improve drainage systems and address the city’s persistent monsoon-related waterlogging crisis.
