ABSU Urges Sonam Wangchuk to End Hunger Strike, Calls on Centre to Hold Dialogue

The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) has appealed to social activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk to end his indefinite hunger strike, while urging the Central government to initiate immediate discussions to resolve the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

Speaking to reporters in Kokrajhar, ABSU president Khwrwmdao Wary expressed concern over Wangchuk’s deteriorating health, stating that his well-being should not be compromised despite the continuing campaign for students’ rights. Wangchuk has been on an indefinite fast for the past 18 days in protest against alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.

Wary said the student organisation stands in support of the peaceful democratic movement and believes the concerns raised by Wangchuk deserve serious attention from the government. He said the activist has consistently highlighted issues relating to transparency in education policy and the fair, error-free conduct of competitive examinations, matters that directly affect the future of millions of students.

Describing Wangchuk as a climate activist, educationist and recipient of the Upendranath Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award, Wary said he had lived up to the honour through his commitment to humanitarian causes. He maintained that the demands raised during the protest were genuine and called upon the Government of India to engage with the protest leaders through dialogue to arrive at a meaningful resolution.

Appealing directly to Wangchuk, the ABSU president urged him to prioritise his health and withdraw the indefinite fast, saying his continued leadership would remain vital for the long-term movement to protect students’ rights.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court agreed to hear a public interest litigation concerning Wangchuk’s health on July 16, acknowledging the urgency of the matter. The petition has sought immediate medical assistance for the activist and requested the authorities to open talks with him, arguing that his prolonged hunger strike warrants urgent intervention while upholding the right to peaceful protest.
