Non-Teaching Staff Demand Regularisation; Warn of Agitation

Guwahati: The All-Assam Non-Teaching Employees’ Association on Thursday urged the state government to upgrade non-teaching staff of venture educational institutions to full-fledged government employees, similar to those working in provincialised schools and colleges.

Addressing a press conference, the association strongly opposed the government’s proposal to provide fixed pay to 3,286 non-teaching employees and reiterated their demand for regular scale pay in line with other state government employees.

“We urge the Assam government to take up this issue in the upcoming winter Assembly session and regularise all non-teaching employees,” a representative said, warning that failure to act on November 25 would lead to statewide protests.

The association announced that it is prepared to launch a ‘Dispur Chalo’ agitation even during the Assembly session. “We know the authorities may try to stop us, but even if we have to face police action, we will go to Dispur,” the member stated.

They further alleged that repeated attempts to meet Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma since 2021 have yielded no results. The Education Minister had earlier assured them of “good news” by October 10, but no outcome followed. A subsequent meeting in Dhemaji reportedly clarified that discussions were limited to tutors, not non-teaching staff.

With the winter session nearing, thousands of non-teaching employees remain hopeful for a long-awaited decision on their regularisation, increasing pressure on the government ahead of November 25.
