Arunachal Floods: Army Porter Camp Near India-China Border Washed Away as Monsoon Batters Kurung Kumey

Relentless monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in one of Arunachal Pradesh’s most remote frontier regions, with an Army porter camp near the strategically significant Darmu Pass in Kurung Kumey district being swept away by flash floods amid widespread flooding and landslides.

The Porter Camp, situated at Tapa near Darmu Pass—one of the closest accessible locations to the India-China border—was washed away by surging floodwaters, underscoring the intensity of the ongoing weather crisis in the border district. Images captured before and after the incident reveal the scale of destruction left behind by the flash floods.

Located beyond Milli village in Polosang Circle, Darmu Pass is a remote high-altitude mountain pass known for its alpine lakes, snow-covered peaks and pristine Himalayan landscape. Owing to its proximity to the Indo-Tibetan border, the area also holds considerable strategic importance.

The destruction of the porter camp comes as Kurung Kumey district continues to grapple with a deepening flood emergency. In Parsi Parlo, an important border town, large areas have been submerged after the Kumey River rose above the danger mark following days of continuous rainfall.

Floodwaters have inundated the Inspection Bungalow, government schools, private homes and several residential colonies. At the same time, multiple roads linking villages have disappeared under water, while landslides and severe soil erosion have washed away key valley bridges, further disrupting connectivity.

Officials said the vital road connecting Parsi Parlo to the district headquarters at Koloriang has been cut off, leaving several areas isolated from the rest of the district.

Authorities have urged residents to stay away from floodwaters and remain vigilant as persistent rainfall continues to raise river levels. Rescue and restoration operations are facing significant challenges due to damaged infrastructure and disrupted road access across the mountainous region.

The latest damage in Kurung Kumey adds to the growing list of flood and landslide incidents reported across Arunachal Pradesh during the current monsoon season, with several districts witnessing extensive destruction to roads, bridges, public infrastructure and residential areas.
