Chhaygaon: Residents of several villages in Chhaygaon, along with the All Assam Students’ Union (Chhaygaon Anchalik unit), staged a protest on Tuesday against recurring artificial flooding in the area. The demonstration was held near National Highway 17, where the Kolohi Suti, a natural drainage channel, has reportedly been filled during highway expansion work. People from Majpara, Shingkhat, Nowamati, Batakuchi, and No. 1 Balasiddhi participated in large numbers, raising concerns over severe waterlogging caused by the obstruction of the channel.
Protesters alleged that soil dumping and encroachment have disrupted the natural flow of water, resulting in frequent flooding in nearby villages. They demanded immediate removal of the blockage and restoration of the channel to its original condition.

A memorandum signed by village representatives was submitted to the Chhaygaon Revenue Circle Officer at the protest site. The memorandum also urged the authorities to adopt scientific solutions, including constructing proper drainage and culverts under the highway, especially along the Majpara stretch, to ensure smooth water flow. The protesters warned of intensified agitation if prompt action is not taken. The Revenue Circle Officer assured them that necessary steps would be initiated to address the issue and prevent further artificial flooding in the region.
