Hundreds of members of the Kuki community, most of them women, held a midnight demonstration in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Sunday, calling for impartial security operations and equal justice in several unresolved cases of violence.
Braving adverse weather conditions, the protestors assembled outside the office of the Superintendent of Police in Kangpokpi late at night and raised slogans alleging selective enforcement measures against members of the Kuki community.
The demonstrators later marched along National Highway-2 to the Deputy Commissioner’s office, where they continued their agitation and reiterated their demand for fair and consistent implementation of the law across all communities.
Addressing the gathering outside the DC Office, speakers questioned the continuation of security operations while a number of major incidents of violence remain unresolved. One woman protestor said the demonstration was aimed at seeking accountability and equal treatment under the law and was not intended to oppose security measures or constitutional governance.
During the protest, participants referred to several pending cases and sought updates on investigations into the killing of three church leaders, the deaths of fourteen Kuki civilians, the killing of six Naga individuals, and the case involving David Thiek and the reported mutilation of victims.
The protestors maintained that justice should be delivered without regard to community identity and called for all investigations to be carried out in a fair, transparent and unbiased manner.
They urged the Government of India, the Manipur administration and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for acts of violence are identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The demonstration ended peacefully after midnight. Organisers said democratic forms of protest would continue until their demands for accountability, fairness and equal application of the law are addressed.
