Nirmala Sitharaman Begins Two-Day Meghalaya Visit, Focuses on Infrastructure and Development Projects

SHILLONG: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman arrived in Meghalaya on June 19 for a two-day visit aimed at reviewing and promoting infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare and externally aided development projects across the state.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma received the Finance Minister at Bhoirymbong in Ri Bhoi district. During her visit, Sitharaman is scheduled to inaugurate the Northeast’s largest organic spice processing plant established by the Eastern Ri Bhoi Organic Farmer Producer Company. The facility is expected to enhance value addition for farmers and strengthen the region’s organic agriculture sector.

She will also take part in a seminar on Leveraging Externally Aided Projects (EAPs) in the North-Eastern States, where stakeholders will deliberate on the effective utilisation of international development assistance for infrastructure and public welfare initiatives in the region.

One of the major highlights of the visit will be a programme at the U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong, where the Finance Minister will mark the progress achieved under externally aided projects in Meghalaya and lay the foundation stone for development projects worth ₹1,200 crore.

Her engagements span Ri Bhoi, East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills districts, reflecting the Centre’s emphasis on accelerating growth in the Northeast through investments in key sectors.

On June 20, Sitharaman is scheduled to interact with students of Kiang Nangbah Government College and inaugurate the Khliehtyrshi Primary Health Centre in West Jaintia Hills district.

The visit is expected to highlight Meghalaya’s expanding role in implementing externally funded projects while advancing infrastructure, agricultural and healthcare development across the state.
